6:00 pm - 7:15 pm
Join us on June 30 to honor Cantor Bernard, thank him for his 18 years of service and wish him well before he returns to his personal holy city of Seattle. In honor of Cantor Bernard, we will welcome special guests, Rabbi Kenneth Chasen of Los Angeles, CA and Rabbi Dr. Nancy Wiener, of New York, NY.
Ken Chasen is Senior Rabbi of Leo Baeck Temple in Los Angeles. He is also a nationally recognized composer who Cantor Bernard values for both his extraordinary talent and his great wisdom. He and Cantor Bernard first worked together at the 2005 Biennial and were subsequently composition partners at Kesher Shir, an experience that Cantor Bernard has described as “more fun than should be legal!”
Nancy Wiener is Fieldwork Coordinator for Pastoral Counseling at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. In 1996 as part of a chaplaincy class she was offering, Rabbi Wiener assigned Cantor Bernard to the pediatrics unit at New York Hospital. Up to that point, Cantor Bernard had worked very little with children but Rabbi Wiener foresaw the possibilities in making that match. Since then, Cantor Bernard’s life has been enriched immeasurably through his work with children — all made possible by a single decision for a class assignment.
