At Temple Beth El, we believe that singing Jewish songs and learning to pray through music from a young age are critical to the development of lasting Jewish identity. All of our young congregants sing, pray, and dance at Tot Shabbat, Religious School T’filah, Shabbat Evening SongFests, Family Shabbat Services, and at our youth events. Children in our Religious School, grades K-7 can join our Youth Choir under the direction of Patty Torcellini. 8th-12th graders have three distinct additional musical opportunities: Songleading with Ms. Patty and Teen Vocal Ensemble and Teen Band with Cantor Thomas.
Teen Band & Teen Vocal Ensemble
Made up of students 8th-12th grade, the Teen Band and Teen Vocal Ensemble lead the music for our monthly, Saturday morning Congregational Shabbat services. Many students participate in both ensembles. Teen Band practices on Congregational Shabbat mornings from 9:00-10:00 am; Teen Vocal ensemble has one hour-long rehearsal during the week preceding Congregational Shabbat and a warm-up/sound check on Saturday morning from 10:00-10:30 am. Band and Vocal Ensemble members usually join in the congregational brunch immediately before the 11:00 am service.
High Holiday Adult Choir
The High Holiday choir provides music for services on S’lichot, Rosh Hashanah, and Yom Kippur. Leading music for the holiday season is a profoundly moving musical and spiritual experience, deeply appreciated by our congregants. The group is composed of volunteers from our Temple Beth El family and four professional section leaders, and is conducted by Dr. John Blizzard, professor of voice at Wingate University and former Temple Beth El cantorial soloist. Rehearsals take place on Tuesday evenings beginning approximately two months before Rosh Hashanah. For more information, contact Cantor Thomas.
