Performing mitzvahs and taking on other Jewish adult responsibilities is what becoming a Bar Mitzvah means to me. While preparing for my Bar Mitzvah, I learned how rewarding it feels to help others.

For my Mitzvah project, my family and I helped families of sick children at the Ronald McDonald House on three days this winter. I sought out this opportunity because I knew, from my 7-year old neighbor dying of cancer, how exhausted families are after a long day at the hospital. I wanted to alleviate also having to shop, cook and clean for families. I played bingo and with toys with the kids. It warmed my heart to see the kids’ smiles and hear their laughter. We cooked for and served the families. It put a smile on my face when parents thanked me for the dinner and sat down to relax and enjoy the food. This experience reinforced how blessed I am to be healthy and surrounded by family and friends that love and support me.

My favorite part about being Jewish is celebrating Jewish holidays and traditions with family and friends. Now that I am a bar mitzvah, I will continue celebrating these and participating in Temple services and activities.
